String Art Masterclass is quite a comprehensive and detailed string art book, below is a brief overview of each Chapter.
CHAPTER 1: The String Art Years
The Golden Years of String Art
The early chapters invite the reader to understand the golden years of string art and what vintage string art looked like back in the day compared to the various more modern styles of string art made today. Examples of vintage string art and traditional string art are described and illustrated. The perceived cause of the fluctuation in string art popularity is reviewed in relation to lifestyle changes over fifty years of working generations; suggestions are put forward.
CHAPTER 2: A 5,000 Year Learning Journey
Drawing on Inspiration
An insight is offered into the contributions made by six of the ancient Greek Masters of Discovery who inherited Babylonian arithmetic teachings, and to go back even further a 5,000 year learning journey is profiled. The ancient Egyptian King Tutankhamun and the ancient Egyptian Sun God Horus inspired string art designs in the shape of the Funerary Mask of King Tutankhamun and the Eye of Horus.
CHAPTER 3: Geometric Shapes
The Wonderful World of Geometric Shapes
Some of the most popular geometric shapes are described and illustrated, with these being intended to give the reader a library of shapes available for developing geometric string art patterns. Much is covered on defining regular polygons, these being the key geometric shapes in many of the string art designs featured.
CHAPTER 4: String Art Curves
The Three Golden Rules of String Art
A Bezier curve is defined by its parametric equation which controls its anchor points and control points for generating the trace line, in string art terms a parabola curve is defined by its envelope of string art lines which is orchestrated by intersecting thread lines. The structure of a Bezier trace line and a string art curve are compared and contrasted within a right-angled triangle. ParabolaGram string art is introduced in the form of tangram string art.
CHAPTER 5: Polygon Skeletal Frameworks
Geometric Frameworks for String Art Designs
Polygon skeletal frameworks are created directly from regular polygons and their family of polygon stars. It is a regular polygon’s geometric properties that make these frameworks ideal for creating PolyAngleGrams. The core properties of polygon skeletal frameworks are akin to the properties of regular polygons and polygon stars, these properties being: equilateral, equiangular, isogonal, cyclic, and tangential; importantly, these frameworks have rotational and reflective properties which are perfect for creating symmetrical mirror-image string art designs.
CHAPTER 6: PolyAngleGram String Art
PolyAngleGram String Art
PolyAngleGrams are a genre of geometric string art designs that are primarily concentrated on the design of parabola curve formations. A PolyAngleGram string art design is rigidly founded on and underpinned by its associated polygon skeletal framework. PolyAngleGram frameworks follow the geometric principles set out within the definitions of regular polygons, polygon stars, polygrams, and K-Graphs.
Preamble to CHAPTER 7: The Kaleidoscope
The Kaleidoscope, invented by Sir David Brewster, has been dissected to describe and illustrate how the kaleidoscope-effect is achieved. It uncovers how the kaleidoscope’s built-in two-mirror system generates rotated and reflected chambers. It is these kaleidoscopic geometric principles that are used for designing BellaAngleGram string art.
CHAPTER 7: BellaAngleGram String Art Designs
BellaAngleGram String Art
BellaAngleGrams uphold the properties of regular polygons, not least the geometric properties relating to rotational symmetry and reflective symmetry all of which are essential for developing the kaleidoscope-effect. It is the geometric framework of a regular polygons K-Graph that is transformed into a kaleidoscope construction. The segments within a K-Graph are developed to create kaleidoscope chambers whereby rotated and reflected string art patterns generate the kaleidoscope-effect.
Preamble to CHAPTER 8: Circles Orbiting Circles
The Solar System is used to depict the effect of rotating planets which provides the concept of circles orbiting circles; commonly known as rolling circles travelling around fixed circles. This is a geometric process that generates a trace line for rounded curves, in our case, those belonging either to the epicycloid or the hypocycloid family of curves. The development of generation diagrams and their associated envelope of pencil lines are described and illustrated.
CHAPTER 8: PolyCircleGram String Art Designs
PolyCircleGram Gram String Art
Epicycloids and Hypocycloids are classified as PolyCircleGrams. The most popular Epicycloid is the Cardioid, and the most popular Hypocycloid is the Deltoid. The pattern sequences (chord lines and secant lines) develop the envelope of pencil lines, these then, in string art terms, become the envelope of string art lines, which in turn are converted into threading sequences for developing the string art curve.
CHAPTER 9: String Art Harmony Colour Circle
Complementary and Triadic Colour Combinations
The String Art Colour Wheel and the String Art Harmony Colour Circle, designed by the Author, are both underpinned by RGB colours. Incorporating 24 RGB colours the colour circle has been designed specifically for selecting complementary and or triadic thread colour combinations. Thread colour swatches and thread colour matching cards are offered for assigning actual thread colours to string art designs.
CHAPTER 10: String Art Template Library
String Art Templates
To ensure accurate measuring of calculated nail spacing dimensions a series of geometric string art metric ruler templates and set-square templates have been designed. Also, a 360° string art protractor template has been designed for developing regular polygons. Master string art templates can be saved and stored for developing further string art designs.
CHAPTER 11: String Art in Action
Boarding, Nailing and Threading
How to construct a typical string art board is described and illustrated i.e. fitting the felt fabric covering to the board and fixing the nailing template into position. Nailing the string art pattern with the aid of an awl tool is explained, also the use of a suitable nail height gauge is recommended for setting the nail height above the board. Parabola curve threading sequences are described and illustrated. A selection of threading styles is described and illustrated for different genres of string art designs along with a series of supporting optional hatching patterns.
CHAPTER 12: String Art Trigonometry
Trigonometry
The application of string art trigonometry for solving right-angled triangles is demonstrated. A short trigonometry tutorial explains the calculator operations required for applying trigonometry using a generic scientific calculator. Trigonometry functions can be transposed for solving right-angled triangles, examples of rearranged formulae are shown for reference.
String Art Gallery and Glossary of String Art Terms
String Art Masterclass closes with a String Art Gallery and a descriptive Glossary of String Art Terms.
String Art Masterclass is a string art learning journey for both string art makers and string art designers; it is written for beginners to string art as well as the more adept and experienced string art makers and string art designers. String Art Masterclass is not intended to be a book of wonderful string art patterns; however, there are many string art designs included aligned to this string art learning journey.
The structure and contents of String Art Masterclass in general have been specifically written and illustrated to provide the reader with options regarding their preferred desired direction of interest related to the string art aspects and the associated learning topics. Simply put: "Your string art learning journey is one of choice"

The ParabolaGram Design has been transformed into a string art tan template box containing 22 tan template profiles. The unique geometric configuration of this tangram model enables the design of geometric string art patterns whilst catering for the practicalities of nailing and threading parabola curve formations.
